Ocean Crest Resort

Moclips, WA | 2023

There are many aspects to this dynamic coastal site that were considered: cultural, historical, and natural systems; existing and future possibilities for resort and recreational uses; building upgrades; and enhanced access throughout the existing resort campus. These all contributed to the framework planning for the revitalization and regeneration of this multi-phased project on this dynamic Quinault region of the Washington Coast.

Originally conceived to be more of a roadside motel in the 1960’s, the existing buildings needed modern renovations, exterior building envelope and energy efficiency upgrades, as a first phase. From a campus-wide perspective, the access and trail system connecting natural systems ranging from coastal/ dune intertidal, to ravine and watershed “flow” zone to upland coastal forest also required a re-imaginging to greater use exterior spaces as well as create new outdoor rooms.  For later phases, the client group wished to integrate a range of amenities and offerings such as a new reception and lobby area, a new bistro, enhanced recreational and relaxation amenities, and a new “camp of cabins”  in a remnant forested area of the site, logged decades ago, but which has since had remained untouched.

From a historical cultural perspective, there is a long-standing indigenous population, and many locals engaged in timber and fishing, and a seasonal tourist population that ebbs and flows depending on weather. Given the dynamics of this place and the fact that the resort already had decent visitor-ship, Kina in collaboration with Constructive Form, strategized phasing, implementation of a site-wide multi sensorial system, educational aspects with enhanced accessibility and new use areas for recreation, including beach, clamming, hiking, overlooks, and out-of-doors dining and cooking.
